Andhra Loyola Physics Association (ALPHA) is an association with 150 students studying three years of B.Sc degree course (MPC combination in AP,NP, DP sections) and 15 lecturers of the Department of Physics. There are 7 Doctorates and 3 M.Phils among the staff.
ALPHA is engaged in the student centered academic activities like industrial tours, guest lectures, Student seminars and activities to promote human values such as Blood donation and Software training to blind students. Both academic excellence and human excellence are the two eyes of the association.
Keeping the spirit alive, the association organised various activities during this year 2007-08. Adopting “Towards excellence and professionalism…” as the motto these activities are organised in such a way to promote the strengths of the department and to provide opportunities to meet various levels of the students and interests.
There has been a decline in the number of students taking up basic sciences and research. In order to counter this trend, a State level student seminar on Nanotechnology was organised which was well appreciated by press and public. We could bring an impetus towards creating awareness and need for research in an interdisciplinary area like Nanotechnology.
We also organised a guest lecture on “Giant Magneto Resistance”, the phenomenon which bagged Nobel Prize in Physics-2007. This helped the staff and students to update and have passion for the subject.
A number of guest lectures were also arranged during this year by using the resource persons from the department, to address different intellectual capacities of the students such as students from Telugu medium.
A lecture cum workshop is also organised to orient the students towards Research.
The students of ALPHA actively participated in the mega science exhibition organised by the college and exhibited both experimental and communication skills.
In tune with the modern means of communication a blog on world wide web has been created and it become a popular link between the organizers and various stake holders of the association.
Academic excellence without human excellence is vain. In order to promote human values ALPHA organised a “Sensitization Programme towards Physically challenged”. The Principal and Teachers of Deaf institute and Blind School, Parents of the differently abled and visually challenged lecturer/students addressed the students which was moderated by the Principal of our college. It was an wonderful experience to understand the desires of the physically challenged and to learn the ways to respond to their needs.
An Eye Donation Campaign and Software training to the Blind students were the outcome of these programme. The inspired students of ALPHA lead these programmes and dedicated a good amount of time in these programmes.
A mega blood donation camp was also organised in the college. There were about 67 students who have donated blood that was given to the poor patients admitted in Government General Hospital of Vijayawada.
