Chemistry Paper-2 revealed

Some of you have been asking about how to prepare for Chemistry Paper-2...well the only method to prepare is to practice, practice and practice....if you think that paper-2 can be prepared in a short time frame then it is not possible....only method is to practice questions of paper-2 at least for 1.5 hrs everyday (keep the solution manual with you so that in case of any difficulties that can be consulted)....start with one book, finish in 20 days and then move to next book...In this way you will develop a problem solving aptitude and will cover a lot of questions so in exam you will find some of the questions from these books....
The following books are very useful for practice (as a lot of questions have been asked from these books in previous year exams of IAS and IFS): the list is tentative, it may vary according to your choice....
(Click on the link to open the book description and to buy it online)

2. Organic Chemistry by McMurry

Well if some one asks that from where will i get these books....some of them are available on internet at http://www.flipkart.com (just type organic chemistry in flipkart.com, you will get almost all the books mentioned above and also more than that, in fact there is no defined book for Chemistry paper-2 and question can come from any book, so it depends on the aspirant that how many books he/she can cover for chemistry paper-2 )..

Most of the above books can be bought in hard copies from the following places
  • Universal Books House, 1697, Nai Sarak, New Delhi, Delhi-06 ,Contact No: 01123261903 ‎
  • Agrawal Book Depot, Nai Sarak, New Delhi
  • Jawahar Book Depot, Ber Sarai, Near IIT Delhi, Delhi.
  • Many of the books of Physics and Chemistry are also available on various e-commerce sites like http://www.flipkart.com/ and http://www.infibeam.com/Books/ so one can order them online also and these websites deliver the books at your doorstep....
I have also uploaded some of the above books on a server so u can download them, take printout and read them (no need to buy them if it is costly in the shops) ....Here is the link for the server

Note : There is no shortcut for Chemistry paper-2 so you will have to give more time to it....if u hesitate in buying and reading the books then i can not help.....I had a printer and laptop (so i used to take printout of the relevant chapters and read it accordingly)

P.S: My idea of completeness of preparation of Chemistry paper-2 is that if some one is able to solve Chemistry paper-2 of CSE 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006 and IFS 2007 and IFS 2011 Chemistry paper-2 then he/she is in having good level in paper-2....and he/she may expect a good score in the paper-2 of Chemistry

Tips for Chemistry Paper-1

Hi friends,
I would like to tell a few points about the preparation of Chemistry paper-1 which may be helpful in increasing the score in Chemistry paper-1....use arts optional based approach in Science subjects like preparing model answers, remembering the derivations etc...
  • Prepare all the 15 chapters of Chemistry paper-1, don't leave any chapter completely(although i left main group Chemistry) but it may be counterproductive to leave any particular chapter..
  • Make synoptic notes of all the chapters, this helps in quick revision of the entire syllabus..
  • Try to bring some innovation in ur answers, don't rely solely on Puri Sharma & Pathania and Brilliant notes for Chemistry paper-1...
  • try to include more diagrams and analysis in your answers (show the baby steps in ur answers)...there is lot of subjectivity in the answers of the questions of Chemistry paper-1. For the same question of 20 marks, marks may vary significantly based on the quality of answers...
  • Make Chapter wise lists of questions that were asked in previous year's Civil Services Exam and Forest Service Exams...This will help in analyzing the trend of the question that are being asked...
  • also make a chapter wise list of all probable questions and most difficult questions, prepare model answers of such questions.
  • Every day prepare model answers to some of the previously asked questions of Chemistry paper-1 ( please prepare them in UPSC format sheets)...
  • Practice all numerical that have come in the previous CSE and IFS exam papers...keep in mind the sign convention to be used in thermodynamics and also the units to be used in Clausius Clapeyron Equation...
  • For Structures like NaCl, CsCl, etc practice in U.P.S.C format sheets and make a scale so that these structures looks nice in the answer sheet...
  • Some of the key points to kept in mind during examination:
  1. Choose the optional questions wisely, take some time to decide the questions( do not get tempted by the numericals, try to avoid them because if final answer of numerical is wrong then hardly any mark will be awarded on that question)
  2. It is not necessary to begin with the compulsory questions, start from the question that u know the best and move in the decreasing order of quality of answers rather that attempting questions in a serial order...
  3. Please make diagrams with Pencil and try to use two different colored pens Black and blue(do not use red or green colored pens).. a little improvement in presentation may improve score by 10-20 marks...Please avoid cutting in the answer sheets and hand writing should be clear & legible....
  4. Do not spend more than 12 minutes on a 20 marks questions....roughly a 20 mark question should not stretch more than 2.5 pages...
  5. Do not write any thing which has no relevance for that particular question....

Strategy for Chemistry Paper-1

I have secured 391 (200 + 191) in Chemistry in CSE 2009. I had 310 in CSE 2007 and 305 in CSE2006. The improvement that I made was primarily in Chemistry Paper-2, in which I had 134 and 133 marks in last two attempts. In this attempt I focused more on paper–2 of Chemistry and luckily it gave me dividends…For Paper-2, I have already enumerated the reading list. Now I will give topic wise reading list for Chemistry Paper-1.

The books that I referred were following:

  1. Physical Chemistry : Atkins (8th Edition)
  2. Physical Chemistry : Alberty and Silbey
  3. Physical Chemistry: Castellan
  4. Physical Chemistry : K.L.Kapoor ( all 5 volumes)
  5. Physical Chemistry: Puri, Sharma and Pathania (PSP)
  6. Chemical Kinetics: Laider
  7. Physical Chemistry of Surfaces: ARTHUR W. ADAMSON
  8. Inorganic Chemistry :Principles of Structure & Reactivity, Huheey, Keiter & Keiter(4th Edition)
  1. Advanced Inorganic Chemistry : Cotton and Wilkinson
  2. Selected Topics in Inorganic Chemistry: Tuli and Madan
  3. Inorganic Chemistry : Puri Sharma and Kalia (PSK)
  4. Inorganic Chemistry: Meissler and Tarr
  5. Inorganic Chemistry : J.D.Lee

One thing I would like to make it clear that it is not required to read all these books from cover to cover...some of them are main books (like PSP, Atkins, Huheey) where as some are reference books…..

For the major topics of Chemistry paper-1, I relied heavily on the notes of Mr.R.K.Singh (earlier faculty of Chemistry at DIAS coaching, Delhi), which were made from Brilliant’s notes and Puri Sharma, & Pathania. I kept on adding new topics and improving older topics by consulting a no of foreign author’s books. First thing before start of any chapter is to make a topics wise list of all the previous year’s questions (not only 10 year, but almost all questions of last 20-25 years) of Civil Service Exam and Indian Forest Service Exam [IFS](for which the papers are available for last 10 years). This will enable you to know about the kind of questions that are being asked from a particular chapter...Next thing is to prepare each topic thoroughly keeping the previous year’s questions in mind…In chemistry paper-I prepare all the 15 topics, but some of the topics may be prepared at a very basic level like Bio-inorganic Chemistry, Main Group Chemistry.

The idea of completeness of the preparation is that "one should be able to write a good answer on any of the topic given in the syllabus and should be able to answer any of the previous year's question of CSE and IFS"...

Now lets us discuss chapter wise references for the Chemistry Paper-1:
