Great Basin Plants part 3

As we moved across the playa wetlands where the Parish Phacelia was growing, we came to an emergent wetland community. Aquilegia formosa was blooming beside some open water. Two photos of the same flower from different angles.

I believe this shooting star is Dodecatheon pulchellum. There were so many of them that they turned the marsh purple/pink.

I believe this heliotrope is Heliotropium curassavicum. Gorgeous little flowers.

We were excited to find this member of the Hydrophyllacea. I believe this is Hesperochiron pumilus. It was growing in the open part of the wetland.

This Monkeyflower was blooming beside the Columbine in the wetland. I believe this is Mimulus guttatus. As with all of these flowers, feel free to comment with ID corrections.

Shooting Stars for Thelda and Karen

I'll start things off with Shooting Stars, Dodecatheon meadia, photographed on a prairie remnant in Lake County, Indiana. Honoring the memory of two favorite co-workers who were taken by this dreadful disease.

Dodecatheon meadia

Photo Quiz Answer showing the old flower stalkScott and Keith both got the answer. Habitat was a little funny. The site was in east central Indiana (Henry County) on a hillside that had a fen at the base. The Shooting Star was growing all the way from the top of the hill to the edge of the fen. The flowers were budding last Wednesday (4/15), so they may be blooming by now. Shooting Star grows at Cabin Creek Bog (fen) in nearby Randolph County, so I guess it doesn't always have to be dry.
